A lot of my work depicts the loss of innocence after war. For this piece, I had a 5 year old paint on my ceramic figure. My creation represents a disfigured soldier, but to a 5 year old it is just a fun piece to paint on. She painted smiley faces all over it, and I documented this process with video. The child described what she was doing, saying she was having fun while painting dots on the helmet. She referred the piece as if it where a soldier saying I want to paint his helmet green, but never once asked why he has a nub for an arm and is disfigured. This experience demonstrates the innocence we all have as children. For many soldiers, this innocence is ripped away during wartime.
